Apple killed Safari

One of my favorite features of the Safari web browser has always been the ability to type a word into my address bar and be taken to the appropriate .com. So typing "techtalkforfamilies" would take me to techtalkforfamilies.com without having to type the .com each time. If there was no .com, it would take me to .net or .org instead. When sitting down at a PC that only had Internet Explorer installed, I hated always being taken to a Live.com search page when typing a word into the address bar.

Well, I installed the latest Safari browser update, and guess what? It's broken. It now behaves like Internet Explorer, taking me to a squatter-like Yahoo search page (ww15.sitefindservice.net). At least with Firefox, I can just hold down the "Command" key on a Mac to get the automatic .com, but I've found no way to do that with Safari.

So here at our house, we're now testing out other browsers to see what our new choice will be. Good-bye Safari. We'll miss you.

Update

Apparently, it's just me. Is anyone else having this problem? I'm on the phone w/ Apple, and they're stumped, so I guess this isn't a new Safari "Feature." Check back to find out when I get an answer.

Apple has no idea

Well, it's not my ISP, and it's not my router, so it must just be 3 of my Macs, because the other 2 don't have the problem. Incidentally, those other 2 don't happen to be running Leopard.
Apple's representative suggested that I reset Safari. Did that, didn't help. I also downloaded and am running MacScan (did you know the Mac has spyware/malware detection software?)--we'll see whether that helps. I doubt it if clearing my entire cache, history, and even favicons didn't help. It detected some tracking cookies, but I since deleted all my cookies, so those should be gone.
Their only other suggestion is reinstalling Safari (might try that if I backup my bookmarks) or an archive and install (this is an annoying problem, but not worth that hassle).
I'll keep you all aware of any further developments.
If anyone else has run into this problem, leave a comment below.
