Review: Nancy Drew: The Deadly Secret of Olde World Park for DS
Many different people have played Nancy Drew throughout the years in various television shows and movies. Now, in Majesco's DS game, Nancy Drew: The Deadly Secret of Olde World Park you can play as Nancy Drew and try to solve the mystery. Your first mystery is to find out what happened to your friend's missing dress and park pass. Other mysteries will develop from clues you discover while searching for those items. Along the way you'll meet many people to talk with and question. To ask a question, you touch the icon shown on the touch screen. Some people will be reluctant to talk and won't want to give you any information. If that happens, you will have to play one of 5 mini-games to try to gain their trust.
When you find new clues, a new item icon will shows up in the touch screen's Clue Journal. You can touch the item to review the specific clue. Any new items you get will be stored in a bag. You can review what's in there by touching the icon. While Nancy is searching for clues, there is a lot of onscreen help. An icon of a person walking will let you know that you can enter specific areas. An icon of a magnifying glass will let you know that there is something nearby to investigate.
When Nancy is in an area she doesn't belong in, she needs to stay in the shadows so she isn't spotted. There is a shadow meter that will rise whenever you are not in the shadows. If it gets to the top, she will be spotted. In addition to staying in the shadows, a few other mini-games need to be played at times to open locks and defuse bombs. A nice thing about this game is that if you are not successful during a mini-game or get caught where you are not supposed to be, you can just try again. It doesn't end the game or make you go back to a different area. You can try as many times as you need, which is a good thing for an E-rated game, where you typically have younger children playing it. I would hesitate to give it to very young children, though. There is nothing inappropriate that you have to worry about, but it could be a little scary for them at times. My 10 year old daughter really liked the game. I don't think I'd want my 6 year old playing it yet, though. Of course, this depends on your kids and knowing what they can handle. The game is fairly short. Once you finish, there is not a lot of replay value, although you are able to play the mini-games that were unlocked. My 10 year old said she would play it again sometime. It is entertaining, and it's fun to try to figure out the mysteries. My daughter said she was completely surprised by the ending - but I won't tell you what surprised her. I'll let you figure that out for yourself. |
